AHA Coding Clinic® for ICD-9 - 1986 March - April; Coding Guidelines
Late Effect
A late effect is the residual effect (condition produced) alter the acute phase of an illness or injury has terminated. There is no time limit on when a late effect code can be used. The residual may be apparent early, such as in cerebrovascular accident cases, or it may occur months or years later, such as that due to a previous injury. The classification provides only a few codes for cause of late effect, and they are as follows: Note: As of October 1, 1997, category 438 has been expanded to fourth and fifth digits to indicate specific types...

Article Overview
This article is a coding reference on late effects, covering the general concept, sequencing concepts, and the broad code categories associated with residual conditions after prior illness or injury. It is useful for coders working with ICD-9-CM late-effect reporting and related external cause coding concepts, especially when determining how the residual condition and underlying cause are represented.
Why This Topic Matters
Late effects are a common coding scenario in records involving prior illness, injury, or neurologic disease, and correct classification depends on understanding the overall structure of the late-effect coding framework. The article helps readers identify the relevant code families and the general sequencing concept without replacing the full premium guidance.
Article Sections
-
Definition and Overview
Introduces the concept of late effects and explains the broad circumstances in which they may appear after an acute condition has ended.
-
Late-Effect Code Categories
Lists the general code families associated with late effects across infectious, neurologic, musculoskeletal, injury, and external-cause categories.
-
Coding Approach for Late Effects
Describes the overall two-code structure associated with late-effect reporting and notes the sequencing framework at a high level.
