Limb Lengthening Devices

Effective October 1, 2004, new codes have been created to identify internal limb lengthening devices. The new codes distinguish between internal limb lengthening device with kinetic distraction (84.53) and other internal limb-lengthening device (84.54). The internal limb lengthening device was developed to avoid some of the problems associated with the use of external lengthening devices (i.e., infection, pain, malalignment and psychological stresses). Article Overview

This article covers the creation of new procedure codes related to internal limb lengthening devices and compares them at a high level with the broader family of limb lengthening procedures. It is intended for coders and billing professionals who work with orthopedic surgery and device-related procedure reporting. The discussion focuses on the scope of the new codes, the effective date, and the related procedure code range noted in the article.

Why This Topic Matters

Accurate reporting of limb lengthening procedures depends on understanding when new device-specific codes were introduced and how they relate to the underlying procedure family. This article helps readers recognize the coding update and identify the broad areas affected without substituting for the full premium guidance.

Article Sections

  1. Overview of internal limb lengthening devices

Introduces the device category, the effective date of the coding update, and the general purpose of the article. It also summarizes the broader clinical and procedural context for internal limb lengthening devices.

  2. Device design and general characteristics

Describes the general structure of the internal device and its broad operational features. The section also contrasts internal and external approaches at a high level.

  3. New codes and related procedure range

Presents the newly established procedure reporting entries and notes their relationship to the broader limb lengthening procedure family. The section identifies the code range referenced alongside the device-specific additions.
