Long QT Syndrome

A new code, 426.82, has been created to identify long QT syndrome. Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is a disorder of the heart’s electrical system characterized by a prolongation of the QT interval on electrocardiogram (ECG). It is associated with recurrent syncope and sudden death. A number of specified genetic defects have been identified as causes of the long QT syndrome, most of which involve genes for ion channels that control repolarization of the heart. It usually affects children or young adults. Other forms of LQTS include: Jervell-Lange-Nielsen syndrome, which involves congenital bilateral neural deafness; and...

Article Overview

This article covers a diagnosis coding update for long QT syndrome and related inherited forms, along with a reminder about distinguishing the condition from an electrocardiographic finding. It is relevant to coders, CDI staff, and clinicians who need to understand where the new code fits within the broader conduction-disorder category and what general clinical context is associated with the condition.

Why This Topic Matters

Accurate classification of long QT syndrome affects diagnosis reporting and helps avoid confusion with a similar ECG finding. The article is useful for anyone working with cardiology-related coding updates and inherited cardiac conditions.

Article Sections

  1. Overview of Long QT Syndrome

Introduces the condition, its general clinical context, and the patient populations commonly affected.

  2. Related Inherited Forms and Coding Placement

Summarizes related named syndromes and shows how the diagnosis is grouped within conduction-disorder coding categories.

  3. Clinical Context and Distinguishing from ECG Finding

Briefly mentions general management concepts and emphasizes the distinction between the diagnosis and a separate electrocardiographic finding.
