AHA Coding Clinic® for ICD-9 - 1992 Second Quarter
Lymphomas
Note:As of October 1, 2007 category 200 has been expanded to allow for a more current classification of lyphomas Lymphomas are systemic diseases that do not "metastasize" in the same way that solid tumors do (classified to categories 140-199). A lymphoma, regardless of the number of sites involved, is not considered metastatic, and should be coded to the 200-202 categories. Solid tumors frequently metastasize to the lymph nodes and/or bone marrow. These are not lymphomas; they are secondary sites of the solid tumor. In cases of solid tumor metastases to the lymphatic system, a code from category 196, Secondary...

Article Overview
This article covers lymphoma classification and coding guidance for malignant neoplasms involving lymphatic and extranodal sites. It is aimed at coders, compliance staff, and oncology documentation reviewers who need to understand how lymphoma differs from solid tumor metastasis, how remission is handled, and which cancer categories are referenced for related site involvement. It also notes effective-date updates and includes a few lymphoma-related scenarios and questions for context.
Why This Topic Matters
Accurate lymphoma classification affects diagnosis coding, cancer registry consistency, and avoidance of misclassifying lymphoma as secondary disease from a solid tumor. The article helps users recognize the broader category structure and related neoplasm references used in oncology coding.
Article Sections
-
Note
