Mechanical Thrombectomy of Lower Extremity

A 71-year-old patient is admitted with large volume left lower extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Using ultrasound guidance, a micropuncture set was used to gain access to the lesser saphenous vein. Using a guidewire, the thrombosis in the superficial femoral vein was transversed. A standard J-tipped guidewire was then placed and an angiojet catheter was then advanced over the catheter and used throughout the length of the thrombus. A venogram showed lysis of about 50% of the origin clot burden. A 40 cm infusion catheter was then placed and catheter directed thrombolysis was initiated. How should this procedure be coded? ...

Article Overview

This premium article focuses on a lower-extremity deep vein thrombosis case and the coding questions raised by the procedure documentation. It is intended for coders, auditors, and revenue cycle staff who work with vascular, interventional, and radiology-related coding. The article addresses the procedure context, the relevant code set, and the coding approach discussed in the source material without reproducing the full rationale.

Why This Topic Matters

Lower-extremity thrombectomy cases can involve multiple documented components, and accurate code identification depends on understanding the procedure context and the coding framework used in the article.
