Mechanical Ventilation - Specifying the Duration
New Codes October 1, 1991 ICD-9-CM will have new codes beginning October 1, 1991 which will identify the duration a patient is on continuous mechanical ventilation. The code for "other mechanical ventilation" is being deleted and three new codes are being created to specify ranges of time for other continuous mechanical ventilation. The old and new codes are as follows: Old code: deleted 93.92 Other mechanical ventilation New codes: Effective October 1, 1991 96.70 Continuous mechanical ventilation of unspecified duration Mechanical ventilation NOS 96.71 Continuous mechanical ventilation for less than 96 consecutive hours 96.72 Continuous...

Article Overview
This article covers an ICD-9-CM update effective October 1, 1991 that introduces duration-specific reporting for continuous mechanical ventilation and retires an older ventilation code. It explains the general scope of the new category, the documentation sources used to support reporting, and the broader inpatient coding context in which the update was developed. It is useful for coders, CDI staff, and inpatient coding professionals who need to understand how the article frames the new ventilation code set and the documentation themes discussed.
Why This Topic Matters
The update affects how ventilation episodes are classified in inpatient records and how related utilization data may be captured for DRG analysis. Understanding the article helps readers assess whether a case involves the relevant ventilation category and what kinds of record documentation the discussion emphasizes.
