Meconium Aspiration/Meconium Ileus
Note: As of October 1, 2005, code 770.1 was expanded to describe various types of fetal aspiration. Meconium aspiration syndrome is synonymous with the older phrases of massive aspiration syndrome, massive fetal aspiration, atelectasis neonatorum, and fetal aspiration. It occurs when the fetus gasps while in the uterus or birth canal (post maturity may play an important role) and inhales amniotic, vaginal, or oropharyngeal fluids. Tachypnea, wheezing, and/or apnea may be present. In milder forms, dyspnea occurs soon after birth, lasts 2-3 days followed by rapid recovery.
