Mucositis

Effective October 1, 2006, codes were created for mucositis of different anatomic sites. Mucous membranes line the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum. When mucous cells are destroyed by anticancer treatment such as chemotherapy and radiation, the mucosa sheds and is susceptible to lacerations and general wasting. In oral mucositis or stomatitis, painful ulcerative sores develop, resulting in difficulty eating, drinking and taking oral medications. In some cases, mucositis causes infection and hemorrhage. Symptoms are treated with analgesics and antibiotics. While mucositis most frequently occurs in the mouth and along the alimentary tract, treatment of ovarian cancer...

Article Overview

This article explains a set of ICD-9-CM updates related to mucositis across several body sites, including oral, nasal, gastrointestinal, and gynecologic locations. It is aimed at coding professionals and clinical documentation staff who need to understand how the topic was organized in the classification update and what broad areas of guidance were included. The article also includes a practical coding example involving cancer treatment-related mucositis.

Why This Topic Matters

Mucositis can appear in more than one anatomic site and may be associated with cancer therapy, so the coding update affects documentation review and diagnosis selection. Understanding the scope of the revision helps coders and auditors recognize when the topic is addressed in multiple chapters or body systems.

Article Sections

  1. Overview of mucositis

Introduces the general topic and describes mucosal involvement across different body sites in the context of treatment-related injury.

  2. ICD-9-CM respiratory and oral soft tissue updates

Summarizes the classification changes affecting upper respiratory tract and oral soft tissue categories, including revised and newly added entries.

  3. Gastrointestinal and gynecologic mucositis updates

Covers additional classification changes for gastrointestinal and female reproductive system sites where mucositis may be documented.

  4. Coding example

Presents an example scenario illustrating how the topic may appear in a clinical encounter and the type of coding discussion included in the article.
