Article Overview

This article explains the 2007 update to the ICD-9-CM classification of myotonic disorders and discusses the main clinical groupings included in the revised structure. It is useful for coders, CDI staff, and clinicians who need a high-level understanding of how these disorders are organized in the coding system and what types of guidance the update introduced.

Why This Topic Matters

The article helps readers understand a coding revision that created more specific diagnostic categories for related neuromuscular conditions. That matters for accurate classification, documentation review, and searching related myopathy topics.

Article Sections

  1. Clinical overview of myotonic disorders

Introduces myotonia and summarizes the broad clinical patterns associated with myotonic disorders. It also distinguishes major disorder groupings at a general level.

  2. ICD-9-CM coding revision

Describes the October 1, 2007 update to the myotonic disorders category and the resulting reorganization of the code set. The section outlines the overall structure of the revised diagnosis grouping.

  3. Specific myotonic disorder categories
