Other (NEC) and Unspecified (NOS) Code Titles
Codes labeled "other specified" (NEC - not elsewhere classified) or "unspecified" (NOS - not otherwise specified) are used only when neither the diagnostic statement nor a thorough review of the medical record provides adequate information to permit assignment of a more specific code. Use the code assignment for "other" or NEC when the information at hand specifies a condition but no separate code for that condition is provided. Use "unspecified" (NOS) when the information at hand does not permit either a more specific or "other" code assignment. When the Alphabetic Index assigns a code to a category labeled "other...

Article Overview
This article discusses the role of NEC and NOS titles in diagnosis coding and how they relate to reviewing Alphabetic Index and Tabular List entries. It uses classification examples to show how broader and more specific code categories are represented in coding references and why careful record review matters. The article is aimed at coders, auditors, and health information professionals who need to understand how general and unspecified diagnostic terms are handled in code assignment.
Why This Topic Matters
Understanding NEC and NOS titles helps prevent overcoding or undercoding when medical documentation is limited or when a more specific category may exist in the classification system. It is especially relevant for anyone reviewing diagnosis terminology, index entries, and tabular subdivisions for accurate code selection.

Guidance on NEC and NOS titles
Introduces the general distinction between broader unspecified terminology and categories used when no separate, more specific option is available. It also notes the need to review classification references when a term maps to one of these categories.
-
Examples
Provides several illustration-based discussions drawn from the Alphabetic Index and Tabular List. The examples compare how different diagnostic terms may align with broader categories, unspecified categories, or more specific subdivisions.
