Non-Hodgkin's Lymphomas

Effective October 1, 2007, the title of category 200, Lymphosarcoma and reticulosarcoma, has been revised to read “Lymphosarcoma and reticulosarcoma and other specified malignant tumors of lymphatic tissue.” In addition, category 200 has been expanded to allow for a more current classification of lymphomas based on specific designations of behavior. Category 200 requires a fifth digit to indicate the specific site(s) involved. If the lymph nodes affected include more than one region of the body (e.g., head and thorax, neck and abdomen, axilla and lower limb, upper limb and pelvis), the fifth...

Article Overview

This article explains an ICD-9-CM update to the classification of non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas and outlines several major lymphoma categories. It is useful for coders and clinicians who need a broad understanding of how these malignancies are organized by behavior, tissue type, and anatomic involvement. The article also highlights the general clinical context and treatment approaches associated with the listed lymphoma groups.

Why This Topic Matters

Accurate lymphoma classification affects diagnosis coding, reporting consistency, and communication across oncology, pathology, and billing workflows. This article helps readers understand how the related ICD-9-CM categories were revised and how common lymphoma subtypes are grouped for documentation and coding purposes.

Article Sections

  1. ICD-9-CM category 200 revision and site specificity

Introduces the code category update and explains the broader classification changes affecting lymphatic tissue malignancies. It also notes the general requirement for more specific site reporting.

  2. Overview of non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas

Provides a high-level clinical description of non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas, including their relationship to lymphoid tissue and broad disease behavior. The section also introduces the general context for subtype classification.

  3. Marginal zone lymphomas

Summarizes this lymphoma group and its broad anatomic patterns of presentation. The section references related subtype groupings and general treatment considerations.

  4. Mantle cell lymphoma

Covers this lymphoma category, including its overall clinical character and typical broad treatment themes. It also places the subtype within the larger non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma framework.

  5. Primary central nervous system lymphoma

Describes this lymphoma category in terms of its general anatomic distribution and risk context. The section also mentions common treatment approaches in broad terms.

  6. Large cell lymphomas

Reviews this common lymphoma category and its general anatomic patterns. The section also addresses broad treatment modalities and overall disease context.

  7. Anaplastic large cell lymphoma and peripheral T cell lymphoma

Covers two T cell lymphoma categories and their general clinical presentations. The section includes broad discussion of disease behavior and treatment themes.

  8. ICD-9-CM revised and new codes

Lists the revised and newly added classification entries related to the article’s lymphoma topics. This section serves as the coding summary for the update.
