Noninvasive Programmed Electrical Stimulation (NIPS)

Effective October 1, 2006, a new code 37.20 has been created to identify noninvasive programmed electrical stimulation (NIPS). Prior to this time, NIPS was indexed to code 37.26. NIPS is a type of electrophysiological study that uses a device that is already implanted, such as an implantable cardiac defibrillator. Arrhythmia is induced with the pulse generator via telemetry signals in order to assess the adequacy of the device and program it optimally, or to assess the effectiveness of drug therapy. Although it is noninvasive in that no catheters are inserted into the heart, it requires the ability...

Article Overview

This article covers an October 1, 2006 coding update related to noninvasive programmed electrical stimulation (NIPS). It discusses the creation of a new code, a revision to an existing cardiac electrophysiology code title, and related indexing and exclusion changes. The article is intended for coding professionals who need to understand how the procedure is classified and how the update affects prior guidance.

Why This Topic Matters

Procedure coding changes can affect charge capture, claim accuracy, and consistency in reporting electrophysiology services. This article helps readers recognize a terminology and classification update tied to cardiac device-related testing.

Article Sections

  1. Coding update and effective date

Introduces the timing of the coding change and the shift in how the service is identified.

  2. Procedure overview and clinical context

Summarizes the general nature of the service and the type of setting in which it is performed.

  3. Code revision details

Describes the related title revision and indexing updates for a cardiac electrophysiology code.

  4. Coding question and answer

Presents the article’s direct coding guidance addressing how the service should be reported and notes that prior advice was superseded.
