Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter

There are approximately 30,000 patients in the USA receiving peritoneal dialysis. Exit-site and tunnel infections related to the catheter are common complications of peritoneal dialysis. Prior to October 1, 1998, no specific codes existed for these complications. New codes have been created for infection of a peritoneal dialysis catheter and for mechanical complications associated with the catheter. In addition, code V56.1 has been modified to specifically identify fitting and adjustment of extracorporeal dialysis catheter only. Code V56.2 has been created to report fitting and adjustment of peritoneal dialysis catheter. 996.5 Mechanical complications of other specified...

Article Overview

This article covers ICD diagnosis code updates associated with peritoneal dialysis catheters, including newly created and revised categories for mechanical complications, infection-related complications, and fitting or adjustment of dialysis catheters. It is relevant to coding professionals working with dialysis-related encounters and those tracking diagnosis code changes effective around the late 1990s.

Why This Topic Matters

Peritoneal dialysis catheter-related encounters can involve complications or device management that require accurate diagnosis coding. The article helps coders understand which ICD code updates apply to these scenarios and how the changes relate to prior coding guidance.

Article Sections

  1. Overview

Introduces the clinical context of peritoneal dialysis catheter use and summarizes why new diagnosis codes were added or revised. It also notes the timeframe when the changes took effect.

  2. Mechanical complications of other specified prosthetic device, implant and graft

Discusses the newly added diagnosis category for mechanical complications involving peritoneal dialysis catheters and references related exclusions. A brief coding example is included in the source article.

  3. Infection and inflammatory reaction due to internal prosthetic device, implant, and graft

Introduces the infection-related diagnosis category tied to internal devices and notes that additional specificity is required in some cases. The section continues into the code update discussion.
