Effective October 1, 2008, code 372.34, Pingueculitis, has been created for pingueculitis, a condition that occurs when the pinguecula become acutely inflamed, vascularized, red and irritated. Prior to this change, this condition was classified to code 372.39, Other and unspecified conjunctivitis, Other. Pingueculae are slightly raised yellowish lipid-like deposits that form on the surface of the eye and are commonly found in the middle-aged with chronic exposure to sun and environmental irritants such as wind, dust and extremely dry conditions.
