Placement of Stent into Aorta to Secure Debris
A patient with an abdominal aortic aneurysm, renal artery stenosis and peripheral arterial disease presented for surgical repair of the aneurysm. The surgeon performed an open aneurysm repair with a bifurcated graft from the infrarenal aorta to the common iliac arteries. After completion, a stenosis of the right iliac graft anastomosis was discovered. The patient was repositioned and percutaneous access was achieved through bilateral common femoral arteries. During placement of multiple stents to treat the stenosis of the anastomosis as well as renal arteries, a self-expanding stent was placed at the proximal aortic anastomosis to secure any atheromatous debris. What root operation is assigned for the stent to secure the atheromatous debris? ...

Article Overview
This article covers an ICD-10-PCS procedural coding scenario from vascular surgery, centered on aneurysm repair, arterial stenosis, and follow-up stent placement. It is intended for coding professionals, auditors, and trainees who need to understand how the procedure is framed for code assignment in an abdominal aortic and iliac vascular context. The discussion focuses on procedure classification and code selection within ICD-10-PCS without broadening into unrelated specialties.
Why This Topic Matters
Accurate procedural classification affects how complex vascular interventions are represented in the record and supports consistent coding review. The article is useful for anyone studying ICD-10-PCS applications in vascular repair settings.
