Pleuroperitoneal shunt

The "new" Denver(tm) Shunt Pleuroperitoneal shunting is a relatively new palliative procedure for the treatment of intractable pleural effusion, both benign and malignant, or chylothorax (the presence of effused lymph and triglyceride fat in the thorax). The insertion of the shunt can be accomplished under local or general anesthesia. The shunt, manufactured by Denver Biomaterials, and often referred to by its trade name, is a single unit silicone rubber conduit consisting of a unidirectional valved pumping chamber located between fenestrated pleural and peritoneal catheters.
