Poisoning by Antidepressants

Effective October 1, 2009, code 969.0, Poisoning by psychotropic agent, Antidepressants, has been further expanded to provide a unique code for each of the common current classes of antidepressants. All classes of antidepressants were previously grouped together under one code. The major classes of antidepressants include: monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs); selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SSNRIs); selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs); tetracyclic antidepressants; and tricyclic antidepressants. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (969.01) relieve depression by preventing the enzyme monoamine oxidase from metabolizing the neurotransmitters norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine in the brain.
