Prune Belly Syndrome

Prior to October 1, 1997, code 756.7, Anomalies of abdominal wall, contained many distinct congenital anomalies including prune belly syndrome. Code 756.7 has been expanded to allow unique identification of prune belly syndrome. This syndrome, also known as Eagle-Barrett syndrome, consists of a triad of features: anterior abdominal wall musculature deficiency or absence, urinary tract anomalies and bilateral cryptorchidism. Article Overview

This article explains a coding update related to prune belly syndrome and its relationship to congenital abdominal wall anomaly classifications. It is aimed at readers who need to understand the scope of the diagnosis topic, the affected code family, and the broader clinical context discussed in the source.

Why This Topic Matters

It helps coders and clinical documentation readers recognize when an older grouped diagnosis category was expanded into more specific classification options, and it provides context for understanding the syndrome within congenital abdominal wall anomalies.

Article Sections

  1. Coding update and clinical context

Introduces the diagnosis topic and explains that the code family was expanded to allow more specific identification. Also provides general clinical background and epidemiologic context for the syndrome.

  2. Etiology hypotheses

Summarizes the broad theories discussed for how the condition may develop. The section focuses on conceptual explanations rather than coding mechanics.

  3. ICD-9-CM abdominal wall anomaly codes

Lists the broader abdominal wall anomaly category and the related newer, more specific classification entries. Also notes a referenced exclusion statement within this code family.
