Pyoderma Gangrenosum
Prior to October 1, 1997, Pyoderma gangrenosum was indexed to code 686.0, Pyoderma. New codes have been created to distinguish pyoderma gangrenosum from other pyodermas. Article Overview
This article covers a coding update for pyoderma gangrenosum within ICD-9-CM, along with a clinical overview of the condition and its relationship to underlying systemic disease. It is intended for coders and clinicians who need to understand the scope of the diagnosis topic, the affected skin-infection code family, and the related example involving inflammatory bowel disease.
Why This Topic Matters
The page helps readers recognize that pyoderma gangrenosum was separated from a broader skin infection category and place the condition in its broader clinical context. That matters for accurate diagnosis indexing, documentation review, and understanding how the topic is represented in the ICD-9-CM code set.
