Pyoderma Gangrenosum

Prior to October 1, 1997, Pyoderma gangrenosum was indexed to code 686.0, Pyoderma. New codes have been created to distinguish pyoderma gangrenosum from other pyodermas. Pyoderma gangrenosum is characterized by relatively indolent ulcers with extensive necrosis around the edges of the lesions. While pyoderma gangrenosum may be an isolated finding, it is frequently a cutaneous manifestation of an underlying systemic disease. It is most often associated with ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease. The ulcers are often multiple, are generally on the lower extremities and may cover large areas of the leg. The ulcers have ragged bluish-red overhanging edges...

Article Overview

This article covers a coding update for pyoderma gangrenosum within ICD-9-CM, along with a clinical overview of the condition and its relationship to underlying systemic disease. It is intended for coders and clinicians who need to understand the scope of the diagnosis topic, the affected skin-infection code family, and the related example involving inflammatory bowel disease.

Why This Topic Matters

The page helps readers recognize that pyoderma gangrenosum was separated from a broader skin infection category and place the condition in its broader clinical context. That matters for accurate diagnosis indexing, documentation review, and understanding how the topic is represented in the ICD-9-CM code set.

Article Sections

  1. Clinical overview of pyoderma gangrenosum

Summarizes the condition’s general presentation, patterns of lesions, and its association with systemic disease. Also notes broad management considerations discussed in the article.

  2. ICD-9-CM code update

Describes the revised ICD-9-CM placement for the topic and the surrounding code family that was updated to distinguish related conditions.

  3. Coding example

Provides a short scenario involving pyoderma gangrenosum and an underlying gastrointestinal condition to illustrate the article’s coding context.
