Reduction of Intussusception

Prior to October 1, 1998, there was no specific code for a non-operative reduction of intussusception. Code 96.29 has been created for this purpose. Intussusception is the prolapse of one part of the intestine into the lumen of an immediately adjacent part of the intestine, causing intestinal obstruction. Most commonly the condition begins at or just proximal to the ileocecal valve and progresses distally. Intussusception is primarily a disease of young children with more than 2/3 of reported cases occurring in the first two years of life.
