Reduction of Intussusception

Prior to October 1, 1998, there was no specific code for a non-operative reduction of intussusception. Code 96.29 has been created for this purpose. Intussusception is the prolapse of one part of the intestine into the lumen of an immediately adjacent part of the intestine, causing intestinal obstruction. Most commonly the condition begins at or just proximal to the ileocecal valve and progresses distally. Intussusception is primarily a disease of young children with more than 2/3 of reported cases occurring in the first two years of life. It is the most common cause of intestinal obstruction in infants...

Article Overview

This article explains the clinical background of intussusception and summarizes nonoperative reduction approaches used in pediatric care, including fluoroscopy-based and ultrasound-guided techniques. It is intended for coding professionals and revenue cycle staff who need to understand when this type of procedure is discussed in coding guidance and how the article frames associated diagnosis and procedure reporting. The content also touches on coding questions that arise when nonoperative attempts are followed by surgery, making it relevant for facilities reviewing procedure documentation and code assignment workflows.

Why This Topic Matters

Intussusception reduction is a pediatric procedure that can involve imaging guidance and multiple treatment approaches. Coding teams may need this guidance to distinguish the broader clinical scenario from the specific procedure reporting issues addressed in the article.

Article Sections

  1. Clinical background and treatment approaches

This section summarizes the condition, typical presentation, and the main nonoperative reduction methods discussed in the article. It also notes the role of imaging guidance and the point at which surgery may be required.

  2. Coding question and example scenario

This section presents a hospital coding question about reporting the procedure and includes a follow-up scenario involving unsuccessful nonoperative attempts before surgery.
