AHA Coding Clinic® for ICD-9 - 2008 Issue 4; VOLUMES 1 AND 2 NEW/REVISED CODES
Robotic Assisted Surgery
Effective October 1, 2008, a new subcategory 17.4, Robotic assisted procedures, was created to describe technological advances using robotic assisted surgery. Robotic-assisted surgery is the most recent development in minimally invasive surgery. This new technology is designed to enhance surgical capabilities by facilitating the performance of complex surgery through small incisions. Robotics requires the use of a surgical robot (computerized system with a motorized construction, usually an arm, capable of interacting with the environment). It includes sensors, which provide feedback data and a system to process this information. The system cannot be programmed nor can it make decisions...

Article Overview
This article provides coding guidance on robotic-assisted surgery, including the creation of a new ICD-10-PCS subcategory and its approach-based code options. It also explains how robotic assistance differs from computer-assisted surgery and notes that the primary surgical procedure remains separately reported. The content is relevant for inpatient procedure coders, CDI specialists, coding educators, and revenue cycle teams working with minimally invasive surgery cases.
Why This Topic Matters
Robotic-assisted surgery is increasingly common, and accurate reporting depends on understanding the procedure category, approach-based classification, and the relationship between the robotic assistance code and the underlying surgical procedure.
Article Sections
-
Overview of robotic-assisted surgery
Introduces the robotic-assisted procedure category, the effective date of the change, and the general purpose of the technology in minimally invasive surgery.
-
Relationship to computer-assisted surgery
Describes the distinction between robotic-assisted surgery and computer-assisted surgery and notes the types of technology involved in each.
-
Approach-based robotic-assisted procedure codes
Outlines the robotic-assisted procedure category by surgical approach and identifies the general set of code options included in the classification.
-
Coding note for the primary procedure
Explains that the robotic-assisted code does not replace the underlying surgical procedure and that the primary procedure is reported separately.
-
How should a total laparoscopic robotic assisted cholecystectomy be coded?
Presents a coding question about a laparoscopic robotic-assisted cholecystectomy and the article’s response format.
