Article Overview

This premium article covers an ICD-9-CM coding update related to saddle embolus, including newly created diagnosis codes effective October 1, 2011, the prior indexing context, and a brief case example involving aortic occlusion and embolectomy. It is relevant for coders, auditors, and clinical documentation teams working with vascular embolism and thrombosis diagnoses and related procedure coding.

Why This Topic Matters

The article helps readers understand how a specific embolism term was reclassified and why location-specific diagnosis selection matters in vascular coding. It also illustrates how the diagnosis discussion connects to procedure coding in a real case scenario.

Article Sections

  1. Effective October 1, 2011 coding update

Overview of the diagnosis coding changes and the general conditions addressed by the update. Includes the broader vascular category context and the date the changes took effect.

  2. Prior indexing and terminology context

Background on how the term was previously indexed and why the terminology is clinically and administratively important. Also notes the emphasis on location-specific classification.

  3. Category revisions and new codes

Summary of the affected diagnosis categories and the structural changes made within them. Covers the revised and newly added entries discussed in the article.

  4. Clinical example and coding question

A short case scenario involving acute arterial occlusion and abdominal aortic involvement, followed by a coding question. The section ties the diagnosis discussion to a procedure context.

  5. Coding answer

The article’s response to the case question, including the diagnosis and procedure code assignments presented by the source.
