AHA Coding Clinic® for ICD-9 - 2004 Issue 4; VOLUME 3 NEW/REVISED PROCEDURE CODES
Spinal Disc Prosthesis
Effective October 1, 2004, new codes have been created to report procedures related to the insertion, revision and replacement of spinal disc prostheses (84.60-84.69). Prior to this change, these procedures were captured with code 80.51, Excision of intervertebral disc. Although code 80.51 identified the removal of the intervertebral disc, it did not capture the replacement of the disc with a prosthesis. Spinal disc devices or prostheses involve the replacement of either the entire spinal disc or the replacement of the disc nucleus with new devices designed to restore disc height for patients with degenerative disc...

Article Overview
This article covers coding updates related to spinal disc prosthesis procedures, including the move to new procedure codes effective October 1, 2004, and the general clinical context of disc replacement for degenerative disc disease. It is useful for coders, auditors, and reimbursement staff who need to understand the scope of spinal disc prosthesis reporting across spinal regions and the categories of insertion, revision, and replacement discussed in the article.
Why This Topic Matters
Spinal disc replacement procedures were newly separated into more specific coding options, so accurate interpretation of the article helps support correct procedure reporting and consistent documentation review.
Article Sections
-
Overview of spinal disc prosthesis coding updates
Introduces the coding changes effective in 2004 and the broader shift away from earlier disc procedure reporting. Also frames the article around spinal disc replacement and related procedure categories.
-
Partial disc prosthesis
Describes partial disc prosthesis concepts, device placement, and the spinal regions addressed by the procedure categories. Summarizes the general procedural context for this type of artificial disc replacement.
-
Total disc prosthesis
Reviews total disc prosthesis concepts and the general surgical approach associated with this type of disc replacement. Notes the spinal regions for which procedure categories are discussed.
-
Revision or replacement of artificial disc prosthesis
Covers the maintenance-related procedure categories for artificial disc prostheses across spinal regions. Explains the article’s organization of these categories without detailing selection rules.
-
New subcategory 84.6 Replacement of spinal disc
Lists the new spinal disc replacement subcategory and the related code groupings presented in the article. Provides the structure of the new coding framework.
-
Coding example
Presents a short admission scenario involving disc degeneration and spinal disc device insertion. Shows the type of coding question the article addresses.
