AHA Coding Clinic® for ICD-9 - 2005 Issue 4; VOLUME 3 NEW/REVISED CODES
Subtalar Joint Arthroereisis
Effective October 1, 2005, a unique code (81.18), has been created to identify subtalar joint arthroereisis. Prior to this time, this procedure was captured with code 81.99, Other operations on joint structure. This code did not clearly identify the procedure. Arthroereisis is the limitation of exogenous joint motion without complete arthrodesis. It limits excessive motion at the involved joint axis. It limits excessive valgus motion at the subtalar joint and retains the varus range of motion. Arthrodesis, by contrast, prevents all motion across the joint axis by creating a surgical fusion of the joint. There are various...

Article Overview
This article covers a coding change for subtalar joint arthroereisis, including the effective date of the new code, the prior code used before the change, and the related revision to the foot-and-ankle category structure. It also provides broad clinical context about arthroereisis, subtalar joint motion, and common techniques and implants discussed in relation to flexible flatfoot and related deformities. The content is relevant to coders, compliance staff, and clinicians who work with procedure classification updates and musculoskeletal surgery coding.
Why This Topic Matters
Procedure classification changes can affect record abstraction, claims processing, and consistency in reporting foot and ankle surgery. Understanding the update helps users recognize when a distinct code replaced a previously non-specific category entry and how the surrounding category structure changed.
