Thrombolytic Agents

Thrombolytic therapy is used to treat acute myocardial infarctions (MI), thromboembolic venous disease, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, and more recently intracranial stroke. Prior to October 1, 1998, the infusion or injection of thrombolytic agents was reported using code 99.29, Injection or infusion of other therapeutic or prophylactic substance. As code 99.29 encompassed so many substances, code 99.10, Injection or infusion of thrombolytic agent, has been created to separate thrombolytic agents from the other substances classified to code 99.29. The goal of therapy for the acute MI patient is to rapidly reperfuse the injured myocardial tissue...

Article Overview

This article explains the clinical context for thrombolytic therapy and a coding update affecting how infusion or injection of thrombolytic agents is reported. It is aimed at coding professionals, compliance staff, and other readers who need to understand how the topic is represented in procedure coding references and how the guidance relates to cardiovascular and stroke care.

Why This Topic Matters

Thrombolytic therapy is used in time-sensitive acute care settings, so accurate procedure coding and awareness of updated code references are important for records, reporting, and billing consistency.

Article Sections

  1. Clinical background and uses

Introduces thrombolytic therapy and the major clinical settings in which it is discussed. Provides broad background on how the therapy relates to acute care conditions.

  2. Coding update and related references
