Tracheobronchial Y-Stent Placement
A patient was brought in for a bronchoscopy with tracheobronchial Y-stent placement for treatment of tracheobronchomalacia. The patient was intubated with an endotracheal tube over the bronchoscope. The airway was examined and appeared normal with minimal secretions. Measurements were made using an endobronchial balloon. Under fluoroscopy a silicone covered metallic Y-stent was placed without complications. The tracheal limb measured 16 mm x 40 mm long, the right main stem measured 12 mm x 20 mm, and the left main stem measured 12 mm x 30 mm long. Both upper lobes were patent and not occluded by the stent. What CPT code(s) properly capture the bronchoscopy procedure with Y-stent placement? ...

Article Overview
This premium article explains coding considerations for a bronchoscopy procedure involving tracheobronchial Y-stent placement in the setting of airway disease. It is intended for coding professionals and clinical staff who need to understand the procedural context, the relevant CPT reporting issue, and why the case is handled as an unlisted trachea/bronchi service rather than by a standard stent-placement code.
Why This Topic Matters
Airway stenting procedures can be difficult to code accurately when the service does not map cleanly to a standard CPT option. This article helps readers recognize when the documented procedure requires unlisted reporting and understand the broader documentation context needed for compliant coding review.
