Transplantation of Islets of Langerhans Cells

Previous to October 1, 1996, there was no specific code to identify the transplantation of pancreatic islet cells. New codes have been created to report this procedure. Transplantation of pancreatic islet cells is performed to prevent the diabetic state caused by total pancreatectomy. In this instance, the patient's own islet cells are transplanted back (autotransplantation) into the patient. Transplantation may also be performed to alleviate type I diabetes mellitus. In this circumstance, islet cells are obtained from a cadaveric pancreas donor and transplanted into a diabetic patient (allotransplantation). In an autotransplantation the patient's entire pancreas is removed; whereas in...

Article Overview

This article explains the topic of pancreatic islet cell transplantation and why specific procedure codes were introduced for it. It is aimed at coding professionals who need to understand the distinction between autotransplantation and allotransplantation, the general clinical settings in which these procedures are performed, and the related coding context discussed in the article.

Why This Topic Matters

Accurate reporting of islet cell transplantation depends on understanding procedure type, surgical context, and the relevant code set references. The article helps coders recognize when this transplant topic is being documented and what categories of guidance are covered.

Article Sections

  1. Background and clinical context

Introduces pancreatic islet cell transplantation and the broader clinical circumstances in which it is discussed. Covers the general distinction between the two major transplant approaches.

  2. Autotransplantation

Describes the autotransplantation scenario and the procedural setting in which it occurs. Focuses on the overall transplant process and recovery context.

  3. Allotransplantation

Describes the allotransplantation scenario and the general processing and timing considerations involved. Also covers the broader transplant settings in which this procedure may be performed.

  4. Coding questions and answers

Presents coding questions related to the transplant topic and gives the article’s guidance in a concise Q&A format. Includes references to related procedure coding context.
