Venous Embolism and Thrombosis of Lower Extremity

Effective October 1, 2004, new codes have been created to identify venous embolism and thrombosis of the lower extremity. Prior to this change, these conditions were reported with code 453.8, Other venous embolism and thrombosis of other specified veins. Article Overview

This article covers an ICD coding update effective October 1, 2004, for venous embolism and thrombosis of the lower extremity. It is aimed at coders, auditors, and clinical documentation professionals who need to understand how the revised lower-extremity thrombosis categories are organized and what general guidance was issued alongside the change. The article also references Coding Clinic context and the transition away from an older code used before the update.

Why This Topic Matters

Lower-extremity thrombosis coding can affect diagnosis specificity, documentation interpretation, and consistency during the period when classification changes take effect. Understanding the update helps users recognize the structure of the revised categories and the related publication context.

Article Sections

  1. Overview of the coding update

Introduces the update affecting venous embolism and thrombosis of the lower extremity and places it in the context of the prior classification.

  2. Clinical background on venous thromboembolism and deep vein thrombosis

Summarizes the general medical context for venous thromboembolism and deep vein thrombosis, including broad risk-factor information and lower-extremity involvement.

  3. Revised lower-extremity thrombosis categories

Outlines the new lower-extremity subcategory structure and the associated location groupings introduced in the update.

  4. Coding clinic examples and guidance context

Presents the article’s example-based guidance and notes its relationship to earlier Coding Clinic advice.
