Venous Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
A 46-year-old patient was previously admitted with left upper extremity (LUE) swelling, pain and discoloration and was found to have an acute left subclavian deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The subclavian DVT was treated with thrombolysis and percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) that was determined to be secondary to venous thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS). This patient is now admitted for definitive surgical repair of the venous TOS to prevent recurrent upper extremity DVTs. The classification indexes "thoracic outlet syndrome" to code G54.0, Brachial plexus disorders; however, code I87.1, Compression of vein, seems more appropriate when a patient is documented as having venous TOS. Please advise how to code venous TOS. ...
