AHA Coding Clinic® for ICD-9 - 2005 Issue 4; VOLUMES 1 AND 2 NEW/REVISED CODES
Volume Depletion, Dehydration and Hypovolemia
Effective October 1, 2005, code 276.5, Volume depletion, has been expanded to separately identify volume depletion (276.50), dehydration (276.51), and hypovolemia (276.52). The new codes will allow differentiation between these distinct conditions. Prior to this change all these conditions were classified to code 276.5. Volume depletion is defined as reduced fluid volume in the cells, including both water and salts, and is similar to, but distinct from, dehydration. Dehydration is the loss of water from the body without salt loss. Volume depletion may refer to depletion of total body water (dehydration), or depletion of...

Article Overview
This coding article reviews a classification change affecting fluid-volume conditions and discusses the clinical distinctions among related diagnoses. It is aimed at readers who need to understand the scope of the update, the diagnostic concepts involved, and how the related code set is organized at a high level.
Why This Topic Matters
It helps coders and clinical staff recognize that related but different diagnoses are being separated into distinct categories, which affects accurate record abstraction and code selection. The article also clarifies the terminology used in documentation and how it relates to the broader disorders-of-fluid-balance classification.
What You Will Learn
- How the article frames the separation of related fluid-volume conditions
- The broader clinical concepts discussed in relation to fluid balance and blood volume
- How the classification update is presented within the disorders-of-fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance category
- Why distinguishing among similar diagnoses matters for documentation and coding reference
Who Should Read This
- Medical coders
- Coding auditors
- Clinical documentation staff
