West Nile Fever

Effective October 1, 2004, code 066.4, West Nile fever, has been expanded to separately identify encephalitis and other neurological manifestations associated with West Nile fever. Patients infected with the West Nile virus can range from having no symptoms, to West Nile fever, to severe West Nile disease with meningitis or encephalitis. Less than 1% of infected individuals develop the severe form of the disease. The symptoms of severe West Nile infection (West Nile encephalitis or meningitis) include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, tremors, coma, convulsions, muscle weakness and paralysis.
