December 2003 pages 1-3 Coding Update: Reporting TIPS Procedures A transvenous intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is the percutaneous establishment of a connection within the liver between the portal and systemic circulations. Its placement reduces portal pressure in patients with complications related to portal hypertension. One such complication treated is bleeding esophageal varices, the most life-threatening complication of portal hypertension.
