August 2003 pages 8-9 Coding Communication:Implantation of Glaucoma Drainage Device: Aqueous Shunt Aqueous shunt procedures are performed in the anterior segment of the eye to reduce and control intraocular pressure (IOP). The device drains (shunts) some of the aqueous fluid from the anterior chamber into a reservoir beneath the conjunctiva, lowering the pressure in the eye. It is eventually absorbed into nearby tissues. The device consists of a plastic tube which is connected to a reservoir or drainage plate.
