CLINICAL EXAMPLE 1 Inferior Petrosal Sinus Sampling CLINICAL HISTORY A patient with suspected adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)–dependent Cushing's syndrome was referred for inferior petrosal sinus sampling to confirm and lateralize a suspected ACTH-secreting pituitary adenoma. TECHNIQUE Informed consent was obtained. Using usual sterile technique and lidocaine 1% for local anesthesia, a 5F sheath was placed in the right common femoral vein. Using similar technique, a 6F sheath was placed in the left common femoral vein. A total of 5000 units of heparin was administered intravenously (IV).
