Nuclear Medicine: Thyroid Imaging (Codes 78012-78014) (June 2013)
June 2013 pages 9-11 Nuclear Medicine: Thyroid Imaging (Codes 78012-78014) The thyroid gland is an important organ of the endocrine system. It produces the hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4), which play a major role in regulating metabolic functions of most body cells. Nuclear medicine imaging of the functional anatomy of the thyroid gland includes, but is not limited to, assessment of thyroid nodules, goiter, and evaluation of neck and mediastinal masses. It is performed by radionuclide thyroid uptake and imaging using either one or two of the following radiopharmaceuticals: technetium (Tc99m) or radioactive iodine (usually I123 or rarely...

Article Overview
This CPT Assistant article explains the 2013 update to thyroid nuclear medicine imaging and uptake reporting. It is aimed at coders, billers, and clinical documentation teams working with endocrine and nuclear medicine studies. The article covers the revised thyroid code family, broad procedure categories, related HCPCS supply reporting, and illustrative clinical vignettes used to show the scope of the services described.
Why This Topic Matters
Thyroid nuclear medicine studies were reorganized in the 2013 CPT code set, so accurate understanding of the updated code family helps support consistent reporting and documentation review. The article also highlights related supply coding considerations and the type of clinical documentation commonly associated with these studies.
