May 2014 page 10b Surgery: Female Genital System Question: Regarding the omentectomy in CPT codes 58953 and 58956, for code 58953, Bilateral salpino-oophorectomy with omentectomy, total abdominal hysterectomy and radical dissection for debulking, there is no mention of "total/complete" omentectomy in the code descriptor, yet the clinical example in the February 2002 newsletter describes complete or entire removal of the omentum. For code 58956, Bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy with total omentectomy, total abdominal hysterectomy for malignancy, the code descriptor states "total omentectomy," but the clinical example in the CPT Changes 2005 describes complete or entire removal of the omentum.
