February 2023 pages 9-11 Tick-Borne Organism Detection by PCR For the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) 2023 code set, four new codes (87468, 87469, 87478, 87484) were established in the Microbiology subsection of the Pathology and Laboratory section to describe the detection of tick-borne infectious agents Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Babesia microti, Borrelia miyamotoi, and Ehrlichia chaffeensis. Because there were no specific codes available to report detection of these infectious agents using nucleic acid (deoxyribonucleic acid [DNA] or ribonucleic acid [RNA]), code 87798, which is a method-specific but otherwise unspecified microbiology procedure, was previously used to report such tests.
