August 2004 pages 5-6 Coding Communication:Treatment of Varicose Veins Varicose veins are permanently dilated and tortuous veins that occur as a result of blood pooling, commonly in the legs. Blood pooling is a result of reflux, a backward flow of blood through the veins due to malfunctioning venous valves. As a result of the blood pooling, the veins become elongated, rope-like, bulged, and thickened. Varicose veins most commonly occur in the legs.
