June 1996 pages 7-8 Clinical Vignettes Using the New Wound Exploration Codes Before 1996, the only way to report trauma services was to use an unlisted procedures code or the existing code, which neither adequately nor accurately described the procedures. CPT 1996 contains four new codes associated with wound exploration. These codes were added to more accurately reflect current clinical practice related to trauma services.
