Clarification is needed on the use of Retinal Surgery codes for retinal detachment and retinal diseases (code ranges 67101-67105 and 67141-67228), which include the verbiage "one or more sessions." There has been a dispute among ophthalmology provider offices as to whether these codes can be reported only once, regardless of the number of sessions, or whether these codes can be reported for each session. My opinion is that these should be reported only once, as the code includes all sessions in a treatment period as long as it was the same eye being treated. It states this in the CPT book for code range 67141-67228, but does not for code range 67101-67105. What is the AMA's clarification regarding these codes?
