CPT Knowledgebase - May 4, 2010

In CPT 2010, add-on code 60512, Parathyroid autotransplantation (List separately in addition to code for primary procedure), has a parenthetical reference indicating which CPT codes it may be reported in conjunction with. However, code 60210 Partial thyroid lobectomy, unilateral; with or without isthmusectomy, and 60220, Total thyroid lobectomy, unilateral; with or without isthmusectomy, are not listed as codes with which 60512 may be reported. It appears CPT did not include unilateral procedures in this section as applicable to the add-on code for autotransplantation. In a case where the surgeon performs a left only hemithyroidectomy with isthmusectomy and also performs a left superior parathyroid autotransplantation, how may the surgeon report the left parathyroid auto transplantation?
