In the Surgery section of the CPT 2023 code set, two new codes (43290, 43291) have been added to the Digestive System subsection. The descriptor for code 43291 describes the removal of an intragastric balloon(s) (singular or plural), while the descriptor for code 43290 describes the deployment of an intragastric bariatric balloon (singular). When performing procedures described in 43290 and 43291, if more than one balloon is removed, is it appropriate to append modifier 22?
