How many units of the intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) codes (37252, 37253) may be assigned for the following scenario? A patient has a lesion extending from the superior vena cava (SVC) through the right innominate vein into the right internal jugular vein. This is a single lesion that will eventually be treated via venous angioplasty and stent placement. Prior to these transcatheter interventions, the IVUS device was used to perform three separate and distinct measurements to assist with selecting the appropriate stent size. The following areas were studied individually: (1) SVC; (2) right innominate vein; and (3) right internal jugular vein. Secondary to this, a fourth diagnostic IVUS measurement was performed in the left internal jugular vein. In addition, would the study of the left internal jugular vein be reported with code 37252 or 37253?
