Cancer arises when specific changes (called mutations) occur in the genes that regulate cell growth, causing the cells to divide and multiply in an uncontrolled way. There are more than 100 types of cancer, and the most common types are breast cancer, skin cancer, lung cancer, and colon cancer, among others.
