Anesthesia practices still have questions about how to report gastrointestinal endoscopy codes 00731-00732 and 00811-00813. Topping the list of questions is what to do when the combined upper and lower service (00813) involves a diagnostic upper endoscopy and a colorectal cancer screening. Medicare and many private payers deny 00813 when it is reported with modifiers 33 (Preventive services) or PT (Colorectal cancer screening test; converted to diagnostic test or other procedure). Reporting the service without a modifier leaves the patient with an unexpected deductible or copayment and deductible.
