Ask the expert: Standby for VBAC: Can the anesthesia group get paid for waiting on labor?

Question: The hospital wants us to provide coverage for VBACs: patients who had a Caesarean-section for a previous delivery and now want to deliver vaginally. The obstetric society says you must be able to do this type of case emergently within six minutes. That means that if a patient arrives like this, we must call in another anesthesiologist to sit there. Can we get paid for sitting there and what, if any, documentation needs to be done?
