Understanding E/M: CPT 2018 updates observation codes, critical care, adds behavioral health
The guidance and descriptors for the discharge (99217) and three initial observation care E/M codes (99218-99220) will be tweaked to emphasize that these services should be performed in the outpatient hospital setting. For example, the revised guidance states the codes should be reported “when designated as outpatient hospital ‘observation status.’”
