Question: Thank you for your recent article about audits on E/M services performed in SNFs (Insider Vol. 16, no. 42). We have a scenario where our physicians are seeing skilled nursing facility (SNF) patients in the office, yet the patient does reside in a nursing home. We are receiving recoups from Medicare HMOs for our visits. Is it appropriate to change the place of service (POS) code to the skilled nursing facility even though services were not provided at that location?
