AHA Coding Clinic® for HCPCS - 2020 Issue 1; Clarification

Rapid desensitization

Our facility is looking for clarification regarding the codes for rapid desensitization when performed with chemotherapy administration. Coding Clinic for HCPCS, Third Quarter 2010, page 3, advises to report CPT code 95180, Rapid desensitization procedure, each hour (eg, insulin, penicillin, equine serum), when rapid desensitization is performed with chemotherapy administration while the in Second Quarter 2013 issue on page 6 in a similar question where normal saline is combined with the chemotherapy for desensitization, the advice is to code the chemotherapy only. In the latter issue, the rationale presented is that both the chemotherapy administration codes and the code for rapid desensitization are time based codes, therefore, only the chemotherapy is reported. Must there be a documented allergy to report CPT code 95180? What is the correct way to report chemotherapy with rapid desensitization? ...
