In the Third Quarter 2011 issue of Coding Clinic for HCPCS, page 6, guidance was provided pertaining to code assignment for trochanteric bursectomy with iliotibial band release. At that time, it was advised to report CPT codes 29999, Unlisted procedure, arthroscopy, 29862, Arthroscopy, hip, surgical; with debridement/shaving of articular cartilage (chondroplasty), abrasion arthroplasty, and/or resection of labrum, and 29863, Arthroscopy, hip, surgical; with synovectomy. However, when arthroscopic hip procedures are performed that do not have a specific CPT code, the unlisted arthroscopy procedure code 29999 is reported once to represent all procedures performed.
